The Victorian State Budget sets out the government’s expenditure and program priorities for the year, but what do the numbers really mean to an everyday Victorian citizen?

BudgetHack is a community event is for data analysts, communicators, researchers, designers, developers – really anyone that is interested, to come together and explore different ways to present and make sense of the state budget information.

Challenge 1. Simplifying the budget and understanding  its implications.

Using the budget datasets and supporting information develop tools to help Victorian citizens to better understand the overall budget or how a specific aspect of the budget may impact certain community groups.

Examples might include:

  • designing tools to help make the budget data easier to search and understand
  • designing tools that help simplify, visualize and make sense of the budget
  • developing ways to bring together budget and location-specific or spatial data to give added context to the budget data

Challenge 2. Equity and Equality: Health, Gender, Labor, Education

According to the Gender Equality Budget Statement (2017): The Victorian Government is embedding gender equality in all of its decisions and actions, as well as modelling gender equality in the workplace, and ensuring efforts to improve gender equality are sustained over time.
The challenge here is to find ways to use budget (and other) datasets to explore the budget through the lens of gender

Challenge 3: Urban, Rural and Regional Change: Infrastructure, Housing and Transport

  • How can the budget data be used to help understand how cities, rural and regional areas are changing over time?
  • Where are there new opportunities in housing, industry, small business?
  • How are budget decisions impacting the environment and environmental sustainability?

Challenge 4: Rethinking “Data” Interoperability and Form

  • How can the budget data be used to help understand how cities, rural and regional areas are changing over time?
  • Where are there new opportunities in housing, industry, small business?
  • How are budget decisions impacting the environment and environmental sustainability?
