$402 million for new schools, better facilities and jobs

Up to 690 jobs will be secured as the Brumby Labor Government delivers a $402 million investment in new school buildings to stimulate the economy now and deliver on the Government’s plan to rebuild, renovate or extend every government school in the state.

Combined with the Rudd Federal Government’s $686 million investment in Victorian schools, this means more than $1 billion will be spent school buildings in Victoria – the biggest schools capital boost in the state’s history.

The Minister for Education, Bronwyn Pike, said the 2009 State Budget would see a further 113 Victorian schools modernised as part of the Brumby Labor Government’s $1.9 billion Victorian Schools Plan – the biggest school rebuilding program in Victoria’s history.

Ms Pike said that in addition to creating world-class schools, this massive school building program would also create Victorian jobs and stimulate Victoria’s economy supporting families in tough global times, with this budget alone securing up to 35,000 Victorian jobs.

“This Brumby Labor Government’s $402 million investment in schools is a win-win for Victorian families in tough global times – it stimulates the economy and jobs now and builds better schools for the future,” Ms Pike said.

“Education is the Brumby Labor Government’s number-one priority and we are taking action on education to support Victorian families in tough global times.

“Our Government is delivering record capital funding to schools to ensure Victorian children are educated in the very best school environments no matter where they live. We are building for the future and ensuring 21st Century children get modern buildings and a 21st century education so they are equipped with the skills to get 21st century jobs.”

The Brumby Labor Government’s 2009 State Budget delivers:

  • $92 million for school regeneration projects to provide modern facilities for new and better teaching and learning, securing up to 206 jobs in construction;
  • $128 million for school modernisation projects – including new libraries, gymnasiums, classrooms, multi-purpose science and ICT centres, securing up to 235 jobs in construction;
  • $25.1 million for four new schools in growth areas, securing up to 62 jobs in construction;
  • $47.3 million for replacement schools;
  • $16 million to help secure the future of small rural schools, securing 35 jobs in construction;
  • $19 million for new, modern relocatable classrooms to replace old portable buildings, securing 44 jobs in construction;
  • $31 million to buy land for new schools or school expansions;
  • $12 million to build three science and maths specialist centres across Victoria, securing 36 jobs in construction;
  • $24 million for new selective entry schools, securing 76 jobs in construction; and
  • $7.6 million for the Better Schools Today program, which provides funding to smaller schools to modernise or upgrade existing facilities, securing 25 jobs in construction.
Ms Pike said the combined record education investment by the Brumby Labor Government and the Rudd Federal Government was focused on building better schools, building the economy and building jobs in tough global economic times.

“The Brumby Labor Government’s massive investment in school building through the Victorian Schools Plan – combined with Brumby Labor Government’s stimulus package – renews our schools while boosting employment in the building industry,” Ms Pike said.

“The Brumby Labor Government is working shoulder to shoulder with the Rudd Federal Government to make the right investments to see Victorians through the Global Financial Crisis.”
