$40 million to open up arts to bigger audiences

Victorian arts audiences and performers are big winners in the 2008-09 State Budget, with the Minister for the Arts Lynne Kosky announcing $40 million in arts and film initiatives to deliver new exhibitions, new performing arts programs, late openings and expanded literary activity.

Ms Kosky said the 2008-09 State Budget arts funding would further confirm Victoria’s reputation as Australia’s creative and cultural capital, and help make it one of the world’s great arts destinations.

“The Brumby Labor Government is taking action to build stronger, more liveable communities and the arts has an important role to play in this aim,” Ms Kosky said.

“The funding announced today is all about opening up our world-class creative and cultural events and institutions to more Victorians and to more visitors to our State.”

Ms Kosky said Museum Victoria received $8 million for Exhibition Renewal, covering its three museum campuses – Melbourne Museum, Scienceworks and the Immigration Museum.

“This funding will ensure that Museum Victoria can continue to refresh and invigorate its exhibition program to ensure that it remains relevant to the people of Victoria, attractive to tourists and at the leading edge of museums practice,” she said.

The Arts Centre receives $15.6 million for operational maintenance funding and for innovative new programming.

“This package also enables the Arts Centre to deliver broad and accessible programs to attract new and diverse audiences, such as more free and low cost events, and programs for families and children, culturally diverse communities and youth audiences,” Ms Kosky said.

“Importantly, this new programming will provide opportunities for local artists as well as attracting international acts.”

Other budget initiatives include:

    • $4.9 million to support the new 100 Years of the Moving Image gallery at ACMI, including a revitalised public program, curriculum-linked education activities, creative workshops, cultural festivals and industry development programs;
    • $500,000 for Late Night Thursdays at Federation Square, a joint initiative between Federation Square Pty Ltd, ACMI and the National Gallery of Victoria to extend the opening hours of ACMI and the Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia to 9pm every Thursday night; and
    • $11 million investment in Victoria's vibrant Film and Television industry, including a Digital Media Fund and TV production.
Ms Kosky said the Budget announcement built on the Brumby Labor Government’s commitment to supporting the arts for all Victorians.

“We have effectively doubled the arts budget in the last eight years, injected more funds into regional arts programming and facilities, community-based arts activity, small to medium arts organisations and festivals,” she said.

“This Budget is important to ensure that we maintain our edge as Australia’s cultural leader, and that our State-owned arts and cultural institutions remain accessible, attractive and relevant to all Victorians.”
